If you’re a Shakespeare groupie, you’ll likely enjoy the theatrical reading at the HP Library, this Sunday, Feb. 28th.  Equity actors will read some of the classics.  By Equity they mean dedicated professionals in the union, which may make this more than the average Shakespeare reading.

Il Mulino (Maria’s Bakery) Bakes It with Love…

Friday, February 26th, 2010

HP Daily Correspondent EB reports on some delicious, homemade lasagna.

Nestled in the back of a Highwood parking lot, across from Fort Sheridan, sits Il Mulino bakery. Actually, while it’s Il Mulino based on signage, it’s actually Maria’s Bakery – through and through.  And thank goodness for that because Maria has some skillzzzz….This reporter was fortunate enough to stumble into Maria’s on a Sunday at 4pm and scored some fresh-from-the-oven meat lasagna.  The eggplant parm and the chicken parm looked like they were in move-in condition from afar.  And the sweets and breads begged for a return visit…and I’ll certainly oblige.

Perhaps the best thing about Maria’s Bakery is …. Maria.  This reporter overheard the following exchange.  A customer came in and said that her mother had called in and pre-paid for a tray of lasagna.  The customer said she didn’t have a receipt but if it was a problem that she could…that’s when Maria herself chimed in, “I’ve got nothing but beautiful customers, I’m not going to ask for a receipt.”

Bargain Movies at the HP Movie Theater…

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

HP Movie Theater sells a 10-pass of movies for $45 – a savings of $25 off the “list” price of $7.00.  That’s quite a savings for some “almost-new” releases.  So let’s say you’re double dating and the other couple picks up the tab and you’re like “we’ll pick up the movie”.  Well, using the HP Movie Theater passbook you just dropped $9.00 on that other couple – GOOD THINKING! As our guess was that dinner was more than $4.50 a head…

Late at Night Deliciousness…Carol’s Cookies

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

carols cookiesLet’s say it’s approaching midnight – and you’re desperate for some sweets. If only Love’s Yogurt were still open – but they aren’t – and sure Walgreens is open 24 hours and have candy up the wazoo- so perhaps that will do…but if you’re really hankering for some gourmet delciousness – consider heading to the Shell Gas Station on Park Avenue and 41 (or the Shell across from the Marriott Courtyard), both of which are open 24-hours.

There, at the counter will be fresh Carol’s Cookies.  They’re amongst the best cookies in the world – and they’re made right here in Highland Park – Thanks Carol!

Friday Night Paint Splattering for Kids

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

We’re not sure if the kids are getting dunked in paint or simply Jackson Pollacking up the canvas, to the extent that this evening sounds like a mess, and it does, it’s probably better that it’s at West Ridge vs. your kitchen table.

Kids 6-10 – $18/each

West Ridge Center

February 26 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

ny slices logoIf you’re a fan of NY Slices, than you may want to swing by after 5pm on Mondays, when they offer pizzas for pick up for half off.  Of course, this deal happens to exclude HP Daily Blog’s favorite NY Slices pie – the Grandma.

With smoked mozzarela, crushed plum tomatoes and roasted garlic, the Grandma may frankly be worth paying full price for (and at $25 a pie, that’s no small committment).  The pie takes 2.5 hours to make and is a direct import from old school Brooklyn.

NY Slices is located along HP’s newly coined Restaurant Row – given the proximity of Jade, Bella Via, Michaels, Pot Belly’s, NY Slices and of course – the new Stash’s…
